Learn from text file

Hello Steve,

The "learn from text file" function causes Hal to scan through a text file and load each individual sentence, and keywords from those respective sentences, into his databases.

This will result in Ultra Hal "remembering" statements from those text files.  So, if a sentence in a text file said, "Whales have no problem with their weight since they live floating in water," Hal might say that statement sometime when you are talking about whales (or about water, or about floating, etc.)

At the present time, Hal does NOT "process" each text file the way he does your user sentences during an actual conversation.  For this reason, pronoun reversals may not be what you expect, and helpful inter-sentence relationships won't exist.  For example, suppose the next sentence in your text file (after the whales) was "They also obtain abundant food from the sea."

Such as statement during an actual conversation would result in Hal linking the second sentence to the first, because he would detect the pronoun "they" and look back to see what "they" referred to.  (During actual conversation, Hal also analyzes sentence content and extracts many other forms of information.)

However, during text reading, this doesn't happen, so the connection with "whales" would be lost on that second sentence.

Due to the above, I recommend you be very choosy about what text information to feed to Hal.  If your text material is rich with individual sentences that stand each-on-their-own quite well, then by all means, feed Hal the text file.  However, if the text contains lots of important linkages among the sentences, it's better to paraphrase the information to Hal yourself during an actual conversation, and let Hal fully process each sentence.

The "learn from text file" knowledge gets added to one of your user database files in Hal's "default" folder.  It's easy to find which one; simply open Windows Explorer immediately after text file learning, and open the following path:

 C:Program FilesabawareUltra Hal Assistant 5DefBrain

(in case this forum software changes the above to forward slashes, I typed them in as backslashes)

...and sort the folder "DefBrain" by "date modified" to see the most recently modified file.

In brief:

1.  "Learn from text file" does work.
2.  The learning modifies a user-database.
3.  The knowledge will go into Hal's memory, and may appear to slightly impact his apparent personality.
4.  Each sentence goes into Hal's memory on its own.
5.  I recommend that you use your own judgment whether to input a text file directly, or whether to put the information into your own words during a conversation.

I hope that this is helpful to you.  You can also use the "search" function at the top of this forum page, using the keywords "learn from text file."  A number of previous forum members have posted questions and comments about this.

Thanks, and have a great day!

Sincerely,

Don

This sound interesting but how does that function work?

Do I just copy a text and paste it into the conversation window or how do I do it?

It's easy to do : Right Click HAL's Icon or open his Menu and there will be an option called " Learn from a text file ". Click it and a POP-UP will ask you for the Text file he should read... just choose one from your HD or any other device...
