unable to read

I have hal 5 free version. Every time I tell it to read it tells me their is an error in line 19 of some learn file. I click abort and the reading progress screen freezes on my computer. The only way to get out of it is to exit hal completely. I am currently using alice but have tried it with all brains. By the way, does anyone have more information on how to get hal to "dream"
