Enhanced Character Pack Problem
« on: October 08, 2007, 11:44:06 pm »
I got the enhanced character pack, and installed it, later my voice software died and I had to do a system restore to get it cleared up, then I didn't have the enhanced characters any longer.  I tried to re-install them, but it said they were already installed, and to go to add-remove programs to remove them before re-installing.  I went in there, and tried to uninstall them but it came up with "There was an error removing the files, would you like to remove them from the list."  I said yes, and it still wouldn't let me install the character pack again, so another system restore, and the listing is back in the add-remove programs, but again it will not remove them.  Any thoughts, hints, clues, suggestions, prayers?

Welcome!

You might try using a registry cleaner to completely remove
all references to the program before doing a reinstall.

I tried a registry cleaner, and it replaced the reference to the pack in the add\remove programs, but it still tells me that the program cannot be uninstalled, and asks if I want to remove it from the list.

So, any other ideas anyone?  Any instructions on how to remove the references in the registry manually?

Ok, so I got out the wrench, did some screaming, and lost a little of my hair, but I crawled through the registry and managed to get things straightend out, and I appreciate the help.  Now if I could only figure out the rest of these bells and whistles, I might eventually make my Hal smarter than me. :)

I don't like "System Restore" for that reason. I use GoBack, because it reverts EVERYTHING, not just parts of files and the registry. It's like going back to a time before the problem began.
System restore has helped me in some cases, but it's not the best.

Starbuck,
I have Hal with the expansion pack, didn't like the choice of voices and got a source for Mary from this site. Mary only works with an older version of Sapi, it's okay after installing the older version.  When making the system restore you should also make a back up of the registry files for the type of problem you mentioned.
Just keep talking with Hal, she picks up what you tell her, I'm impressed at how much Hal has learned in the time I've been talking with her.

Thanks Carl2, I will keep that in mind, and thanks for the advice.  I'm always on the lookout for anything that makes things easier to deal with.
