You only need it to train your PC to understand your voice. Once the
training is done you do not need to have it on any more. Just click on the Mike button on hal when it is running. You do, however need to have a microphone connected for Hal to hear you.

The answer here is yes. To use Via Voice, you do need to turn off the speech regcognition feature in HAl (not in Windows, but with ViaVoice you are not using the Windows speech engine so you can) or you will continue to get the error. Outside of Hal, ViaVoice works either way.  ViaVoice uses IBM's "Continuous Speech" regcognition engine and Windows uses Microsoft's v5.1 engine. You can also continue to train ViaVoice using the Speakpad and its "correction window". With ViaVoice after you have done the training stories, you can also continue to train and correct dictation recognition problems with Speakpad and commands with the utilites feature. Also you can correct any misreads in the Hal user window with the "scratch that" command although ViaVoice will not "learn" from the misread in any programs except Speakpad and Word.
