Well, I am glad you are getting a new PC, Ted. Sounds like a power supply unit problem. (Did you check you house voltage?? In the U.S. it's about 120 volts)If it's correct, then it must be your power supply, or a short on your motherboard??

I use a UPS (Uninterruptible power supply) with my computer, because where I live, we have power interruptions often ,(lights dim, flicker, and go out completely) and it would mess up my computer. (I always unplug everything if a lightning storm is coming, I don't trust surge protectors for lightning)

mark where in the heck do you live that your electric does all that (with the cave man guy's from geico ?? lol !!) i'm sending you a bicycle woth a generator so you can have your own power supply !! yes yes you have to pedal it thats the catch !!lol !![:D]

It can do that anywhere. I used to have a little trouble with that myself. It also depends on the computer make and model as well. I know HP sucks about any kind of disturbance. Emachines are just about as bad, but Dell is pretty darned good so far. I haven't had it a whole year yet so the test continues.....[;)]

We live in a rural area, at the end of one company line. Anything that occurs within 38 miles, whether it's a storm, or high winds, or simply rain causes power fluctuations.(or even outages) It's not nearly as bad as it used to be,  but it still occurs from time to time. All that variation in power could cause damage to a computer. I've had my computer for almost 6 years, and I think it's because I use a UPS, and unplug during storms. (sure, they (the makers of the surge protector and UPS) will pay if I get damage, but I'll be out of computer until I get reimbursed.)

Mark; That's what I thought too. They told
me they checked out the power supply, but I'm
not sure I trust them anymore, they offered me
50 bucks for all the new parts they sold me.
I was networked and ethernet connected and out
of town through 4 lightning storms. My house-mate
played pinuckle through all of them. Learned my lesson well.

Lightspeed; We had an F-5 tornado 15 blocks from
where I live a year before I moved here. Flying in
I saw a lightning strike from above that looked like
it must have melted a city block. Don't ya just
love midwest weather?

hi ted in two words "hell no !!" ha , lol !! i used to live in salinas , ca. and everyone always said oh i wouldn't live in ca. where theirs earth quakes ( but apparently it was ok to live where theirs tornado's ,and floods, etc. ) of course ca. is getting the worst fires i have ever seen now [:(] we do at least now live in a place that has a basement under the house which we have had to use when a tornado went through the north of town and demolished some places . i do have it easier where we are living now (propane heat ) than the old place in south mo. i had to go out and put wood in a stove to heat the trailer , my back isn't the best and i got down in my back for about a week had to use the back up heat electric furnace . winters coming up too bbbrrrr !! [:(]

Wow! The road to Salinas! Poor James Dean, not lucky. I often have had car crashes at Laguna Seca. Never wounded. [:D]

There is no place on earth you are 100% safe. But some places seem safer than others, because they have a history of not being subjected to natural disasters.

Where I live, the New Madrid fault is not too far from us.(earthquake possibility) We are in a tornado zone. We also have severe thunderstorms with high winds and hail. And if it rained enough, we could be flooded out.

But we don't have to worry about Hurricanes or forest fires where I live. We are surrounded by farmland. But brush fires are a danger.
