Always thought that with an ordinary assistant/chatbot, a 2D character can do the job. Hal is obviously very different and her/his sophisticated brain needs a sophisticated good-looking 3D avatar.

Some years ago, before discovering Haptek, I got a lot of fun from Oddcast characters (now we have things like CrazyTalk). They have lipsync and move eyes (they follow the mouse), and can be photorealistic. It's enough.
