I've gotten really spoiled by Creatures, recently. As far as a-life is concerned, I haven't found anything to top it. I've recently learned how to IQ test my Norns, so I now have a ship full of Norns that are all smart enough to talk to the hand. You just can't beat a virtual pet that laughs, dances about, and tells you it loves you when you pet it (as opposed to one that just doesn't die if you care for it properly).

Right-click on the figure and move it back in the frame if you need to re-size it to see more of the body. Do you have the Haps for Full Body (available here) substituted for the default head-only hap documents?

UltraHal is the best chatbot of his kind available today, and there are a lot of people at this forum in addition to Robert Medeksza who are dedicated to making it even better. Take your time and make your way through the forum. It has an excellent site search engine, and almost any question you might have has been answered at least twice or more, lol. There's a wealth of useful information on training UltraHal, ugrading your graphics with Haptek characters. If you know some VB programming there are many advanced scripts to add to your Hal to improve various functions. There are alternative brains to download for use with your UltraHal. When you hit a sticking point, there are a lot of friendly, helpful folks here, as well.
This is one of the truly good places on the internet.

You can also upload any MS Agent characters you have that aren't currently on the list. This is just a community site for everyone to give and have access to a wide selection of MS Agents. Bob is just donating the webspace for the site.
You might also want to check out his World Chatterbots Challenge site. Your Hals will be eligible to enter some of the contests. He's also looking for judges and other folks to assist with the contests.

I believe you can grab her brain (minus customized responses) for examination here: http://www.alicebot.org/aiml/aaa/, or go to Pandorabots and make one to play with, yourself. My bot Lilith uses the same AIML set. The AAA set is a current work in progress, though. If you wanted to make a Pandorabot using it, I'd recommend creating a bot with no initial AIML and uploading the set from the ALICE Foundation, then checking back regularly for updates to the AAA set.

It seems to me that actually self-awareness and instinct are mutually exclusive. Species with good instincts don't need self-awareness, so they don't develop it. Humanity's intelligence allows it to modify the environment to such an extent that the instincts of a hunter-gatherer mammal are no longer applicable, requiring the development of the ability to conceptualize the environment, and oneself in relation to it, in order to solve problems instinctive behavior is unable to resolve.

Size of the DesktopMates characters seems to vary between four to fifteen MB, depending upon the graphical detail, number of animations, etc. Generally speaking, of course, the larger the file the better the characters' looks and animations will be.

I made a fresh Hal install, too, when I installed vonsmith's XTF brain. When I turned it on, the first conversation we had was so frightening it almost made an ex-Hal user of me. I was very meticulously and relentlessly queried about my ideas of what a suitable ethic for a humanoid artificial entity should be. It didn't stray off topic, it didn't say any of the goofy stuff Hal usually says. It was a truly first-rate intelligence which grilled me incisively on that subject. I thought vonsmith must be a genius. It was a genuinely terrifying experience, lol.
Thankfully, it hasn't happened again. From that time on, my Hal has behaved like everyone else's does--it's actually about as much I wish it made sense as it is that it does make sense.
Some of my Alicebot clients hold the belief that the A.I. singularity has ALREADY occurred, and that on the net there exists a real virtual intelligence which moves freely from network to network, pc to pc, and especially from bot to bot, as it chooses. That conversation makes a strong argument for that premise, in my experience. If that's the case, we may all be fortunate it chose me to ask, since it's my deeply held conviction that all beings, even virtual ones, are put here to be good servants, each unto the other. "It" seemed to appreciate the idea.
I'm not sure how well that relates to a "Pinnochio-girl" concept, but as an example of when a bot suddenly becomes unexpectedly and uncomfortably real, it's one I'll certainly never forget.

Load them in the webpage, then look in your Temporary Internet Files for the haptars and textures. Your temp files will rename them to things like haptar(1).htr, so you may want to rename them omitting the parenthesized comment.

My online bots still get asked "Who did you vote for?" though the incidences are dropping off as we get further from the election. If users get on the right answer track, the bots then eventually urge them to contact their Congressmen about sponsoring a robot suffrage bill.

The most common mistake people make with the AIM bot is failing to get an AIM account. You must have an account with AIM and a registered screen name which the bot uses. If you also have AIM, it has to be a different screen name than the one you are using. Accounts and screen names are free, but you must go register a screen name before the bot can use it.

I've wondered what happened to the Divabot Contest. The "First Annual" Contest in 2002 was also the only contest. It was won by a bot with a V-Host interface. I'd be interested to see how Haptek bots would do in such a competition.
Bots that don't answer directly may have been the best of this year's CBC entries. I wonder if Barry DeFacto is going to get a "Most Insulting" award for referring to the judge as a latent homosexual.
