Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal won't dial calls!! PLEASE RESPOND!!

My com port is listed corectly in Hal's general options as com 4. When I tell Hal to "call heather" hal says " I am calling Heather", but no sound comes from my modem, and nothing happens. I don't have the full version, I downloaded the free one to try it out first, but as far as I know Hal should still dial calls for me. Does anyone know what's wrong or how I fix this?
