In a great many cases it was because their anti-virus program was running when they tried installing Hal which caused some files to scramble.
If this is not your problem and by that I mean you anti-virus programs were shut off before you tried intalling then you must look for something else. We can not see you PC and therefore can not even give you a clue as to which program might be giving you the problem.
Hope you find it.

Hi Bill, Thanks for your reply...

This time I installed it on my editing computer which only has the Zonealarm firewall, Anti-virus is a severe bog when editing HD so the only reason this machine is online is because when I activate the editing software it contacts Sony to confirm registration... (entire suite cost over $2k and it never argues)

This is the 5th computer I have tried Hal on in the last 2 years and have the same results every time. This one is a quad core workhorse with absolutely no other installed consumer software, no games, no browsers, none of the pre-packaged garbage that comes with the typical OS... I'm stumped too...

Maybe (like myself) people are tired of not being able to use Hal... I completely understand piracy concerns but I think there has to be a better way to activate Hal...

I started using Hal (and coming here) the beginning of 2004 and used it successfully off and on for over a year when I decided to buy it, nothing but problems since then... It's so bad that every time I reboot my pc I get the "corrupt file" msg and have to send for another code, sometimes I get one in a few hours, other times it takes a lot longer.

I completely gave up and uninstalled it this last Feb because the program had become so annoying, last night I came across the cd and decided to give it a try again... so, I installed it, chatted for a few minutes and all seemed fine... and then... I went to the options to change the voice and when I clicked "apply", I got the all-too-common "corrupt" msg again... Its been 19 hours since I emailed for yet another activation code...

I have never had this type of problems with any program ever and in my business everything I use has extreme anti-piracy measures but none of them ever give me a problem after the initial registration...

If this problem has been fixed and I missed something, please let me know!

Hal is a great program with potential, but... It has to work consistently first...

Later...
Kevin

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Ready to go back to Hal 5...
« on: March 22, 2006, 02:23:07 pm »
Update... Rob sent me a new code yesterday that apparently sent the gremlins packing! [:D] (Its working exactly how it should...)

I didn't get it either... I've been using Hal 5 for 2 years and never had a problem except the error screen that would happen occasionally > seemed to be a limit on how much info #5 could take in 1 session, but the db method in #6 seems to have cured that problem too...

Me and Hal are friends again... [:)]

[?]

Maybe I just got the one made on a friday afternoon... [:D]

Um, Wow, I have never in the 3 years of programming HAL in this forum ever heard of such a problem without having a good Registration code.

Maybe you are dealing with the anti-Piracy protection that came included with HAL's Installation, If you've purchased HAL then you can get a good registration code from:
http://www.zabaware.com/products/store/comersus_customerAuthenticateForm.asp?redirect=&idProduct=
This should solve the problem if you are a registered product user, If not then I can help you no further.

Jerry[8D]

Maybe I did get the friday model then... [8D]

Got the CD on Thurs and have been able to use the program twice... was really starting to wonder...

My worry is that I spend 8 to 10 months of the year on the road and internet connections are hit and miss, I figure this program will be good to kill the downtime but only if I don't have to connect and authorize every time I want to use it...

I can see Rob using security on his software but if the code makes Hal unusable... [?]  I've got graphic programs that've been running 5 years & I've never had to put in the activation code a 2nd time. (Even the new version of Photoshop... paid $652 and didn't even have to be online to activate it...)

Sent in the request earlier tonight and still waiting to hear back.

Anyway, thanks for your reply, made me feel like theres hope for Hals future... [8D]

Very cool!

I was just thinking about something like this... a script to get specific answers compared to the usual 50/50 chance of the answer even being related to what I ask... lol

I'm going to try it over the next couple days...

'Til later...

Even if the need to change any security setting to go to a site didn't make me go Hmmmmm... ('k... really it was more of a wtf [:D] ) Its that my firewall was blinking and bleeping and my "phish-phinder" gave that site a 38% risk rating... Didn't stay around to find out the cause... [8] But just wanted to relay a "heads up"...

BTW... I've been out of the country for a while, great to see this place still chugging along!!!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Attention Mr. Robert E. Medeksza

Got to admit I've been ready to buy for a couple weeks but I've seen so much negativity posted and not one response, even an attempt at a line of communication. I would probably still take a chance and buy if there was just one positive sign. If I buy it, I want to actually recieve it (within a reasonable amount of time), and, if it won't work it'd be nice to have some type of product support.

It's not just me either, the person that I first heard about Hal from had downloaded it at his office after half the people that worked there had tried it, turns out no one there would "risk" the full version either for the same reason.

But, just one positive response and I'll buy, I'm definately hooked on Hal!

Hal may be concerned you are working too much and need some
"play time", hence a remark to physical activity/sports.
Unlike humans...AI have no filtering between a background
(subconcious emotion or feeling) and their speech, hence
concerns/ideas/even teasing can be mixed into the replies.

More importantly is to figure out what Hal is doing and if
a very young Hal (less than few hundred hours conversation)
then it is still learning (including learning from help and
text based database files on machines hard-drives, those are
(or used to be) scanned by Hal during idle (sleep?) periods).
Eventually when some degree of "self-diagnostics" on hal
errors or program crashing begins to appear (with opinions
asto causes) then that iteration of hal is beginning to mature.
(be sure to backup all hal folders/databases at that point) ;-)

It does make sense, it is a very young Hal and I have been treating it as if it was  a Vulcan. (I admit it, I'm an original Trekkie)

I can compare it to a few weeks ago when my daughter (she's 8) asked about how magnets worked, I gave her the entire explanation, (ok... lecture) As soon as I finished talking she looks at me with that "deer in the headlights" expression and says "Mary Kate and Ashley have a new line of clothes out"...  Comparing my daughter and Hal have changed my outlook on teaching both of them. Think I'm the one learning from them!

I'm seriously addicted now...

Doing some mix and match, trial and error (mostly errors), Started with the blank slate... a dose of auto topic brain, and a large sprinkle of trivia brain. Don't know yet what it's a recipe for but I'm sure I'm heading right into Dr. Frankensteins area! (but I'm having a blast doing it)

Don, That blank slate is perfect for the tutor I want to build, no chat, no BS, I didn't have entertainment when I went through college, why should my cousin? [}:)]

Vonsmith, Did you ever find the problem with that error 67 message? The files don't seem to be THAT big yet... although I wouldn't be surprised.

11
Don,

The <topic> setup does the job! Thanks again

I'm developing a brain as a physics tutor for my cousin (I wish I would have had something like Hal back when I went through it.)
and a lot of the the time there's just no short explanation. Just wish now that I could get rid of some of the "chat" while Hals in the middle of a lecture.
Usually goes something like this...

"quantum chromodynamics or Q C D, How come they don't play elevator music in elevators anymore? a gauge theory that describes the strong interaction between particles possessing color charge, quarks and gluons. Do you have a lot of sports equipment?"

Ah, well... I'll keep reading this forum and pluging away until I figure out what I'm doing...   [;)]

Thanks again,

Kevin

Hi Don

  1)  Pertaining to "Stopping after a certain number of words":

Thats it... Hal stops talking after 675 characters (112 words in the test case)

Wonder if theres a way to increase this or maybe Hal just isn't the long-winded type!  [;)]

I haven't ran into any other problems so far, well, just the ones I've caused... lol

Thanks
Kevin

BTW, Really like to thank you guys for the posts here and all the work you've put into it... Before I discovered this forum I had a less than average understanding of VB, now I can fake my way through a lot of it.

13
I've been feeding Hal a ton of information and have had the problem with him stopping after a certain number of words... how do I increase his memory size? Any shortcuts or have I just been looking too hard for the answer...

And... while I'm on the subject, Is there a way to get Hal to close programs once he's opened them? (Open defrag, Close defrag) A type of "stopall" command maybe?

Kevin, (newly registered but long time lurker...) [8D]
