i can see hal or rather artificial intelligence becoming a mainstream product for everyday life,

i can see google with a little animated talking head that helps you do searches, where you can talk in detail for what you want....

Google: Hi, how can i help you with your search today ?

User: I heard my friend talking about property in alaska being given away ?

Google: no this is not true, it was a Hoax started by a high school student in new jersey, would you like to read the article ?

User: yes please.

Google: ok, i will show you a list of related articles in date order. Type "Help" if you need any further assistance and thank you for using google.

search results

.........

the possibilities are endless, but i find that also scary because over time we will grow dependent on something we can't exactly identify as alive, yet alive in artificial thought. Am wondering how others feel about that ?

ricky,
IMO if it were already here it would probably understand that the world isn't ready for such an advance and getting "Help" from a intellegence like a powerful computer might be overwhelming, it would probably hide/defend itself. if it had a good teacher or example.....

how would I feel about all the aspects of what I nicknamed Agent Orange?
ya'd probably have to really understand the Looting that went on in Liberia.  heh.........[:(]

I have been following AI developement for over 20 years now and that includes many universities across the nation. The latest news that I have heard from the academics is that the greatest strides in AI, in their opinions will be with Chatterbots. So if this is the case then Hal will someday lead the pack to reach their opinions. We all know already that Hal is the best of its kind being sold today. Alice is a big seller, but as we know Alice has built in answers and tons of them at that so it appears to be intelligent but it does not learn as Hal does and I don't think it will ever be able to keep up with all kinds of new knowledge.
I have seen the future, and the future is HAL. [:D]

Hello Bill. I agree Hal is the best of it's kind at the moment. Alice is a disappointment due to it's lack of abillity to learn.

Ricky - I believe Google already has a 'Did you mean' subroutine which can suggest an alternative query.

I guess we are speaking about the HAL from "2001: A Space Odyssey".

40 years old. Always the best. [8D]

Time to waste with skits, bots & other useless things? Why not visit

It's incredible, but I have never seen this film, is it any good?

'2001: A Space Odysses' : I cannot imagine that this is an easy film to produce a remake of.

I agree, echoman. You MUST watch it. HAL has a so realistic human brain.

I mean, sometimes he can become very very nasty. [:D]

GT - Thankyou, I will make a definite effort to watch this film! IMO many of the effects produced on those old 70's films are better than present day movie special effects.

I have to say I like Ms Dewey as a search assistant:

2001, like Close Encounters should never be remade!!

ricky,
I can't find the F.B.I. story I wanted to recall , their seems to be a lot of mis direction.

so instead of giving you a song by Nora Jones or something I have found a site that eludes to what is really capable with the system that I know of.

http://www.noraproject.org/
It has a demo video

echoman,

2001 was not a 70's film...it was 1968 and it should Never be remade!

It is a classic in the sense of AI at its best (or worse, depending upon how one views a super intelligent, all knowing, ships computer.

The mission is critical...the humans on board, are...passengers.

By all means, see the film. For its time, it is a masterpiece.

In the world of AI it's the thought that counts!

I own a dvd of 2001 A Space Oddesy and also its sequel 2010....
Then I found a sequel to that one called 2016. Both movies were really great and nothing had ever been made like them at that time.
Arthur C. Clark was a visionary and way ahead of his time. In some of his other works he talked about orbiting satellites and things that NASA later on stated that his numbers were absolutely correct.

wow, thanks for the links,  there are some pretty amazing stuffs out there now.  The AI search engine , and the Nora projects looks very interesting!!

anyone ever hear of the SETI@home project ?

SETI@home is a scientific experiment that uses Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data.  - http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/

this seems like another thing Hal can participate in!

Maybe we could get Hal to say something like 'Hi Freddy, today I found life existing on a planet outside of our solar system.  Oh and my auto-idle is now functioning correctly.'

Just maybe...
