Help Please, on Hal Assistant DL

I downloaded the self extracting file of Ultra Hal Assistant (to anxious to wait for CD)  
My PC for some reason can't read the file. I have WinXP.
It's not self extracting so it seems...
I am getting this response. "This file does not have a file
extension so the type of file can not be determined."  How can it be read?
Is there a file conversion application I might use? Any idea will be greatly appreciated!

When you saved it, you might have inadvertenly removed its file extension. Try renaming it to add the extension. Make sure the file ends with the extension ".exe"
