Error 7... out of memory???

Question:

Does anyone know what- "Error 7 occurred on line 1 in column 0 of Microsoft VBScript runtime error, out of memory"  means??? I checked The search function and didn't find any reference to error "7".

I got this error in the Hal program immediately after creating a new Character.htr; Character.jpg; CharacterStart.jpg; and CharacterBack.jpg, putting them in the character file and briefly talking to the new character. I haven't had a single error pop-up in Hal in over 12 months. I also don't recall any previous error having the word "Microsoft" in it although I could be mistaken.

Also, oddly, when I went to save the brief conversation with this new character I was automatically offered the incorrect file to put it in (documents I think). This has never happened before. I manually changed it to the Hal folder where it goes. When I selected an old character again and talked to it (just to test it), I was automatically directed to the correct folder as usual.

Also what exactly does "out of memory" mean in this case?

I would appreciate any comments.

Sorry your Hal isn't feeling well.

I assume you know that any error code with Microsoft's name in it usually doesn't describe anything that is related to the original error. <tongue in cheek>

Thanks. Now I know what I'm dealing with and I'm sure I'll be able to correct it one way or another. I suspect part of the problem may have been the large number of applications I had running. Would increasing the random memory in my computer help in a 'round about way with this kind of thing? I could easily double it.

I couldn't say what makes Hal so fussy on some computers. I've generally had good luck with him on 3 different computers. However, my hardware is mostly top end kind of stuff. I have a gigabyte of RAM so I don't think Hal feels starved. Memory is relatively cheap nowadays and I don't think you can have too much. If Hal keeps being fussy then adding a few megs of RAM wouldn't hurt.

How much RAM do you have currently? What about video RAM? CPU speed?

Certainly NOT top of the line but "workmanlike". I believe the video card utilize RAM from the overall system to function. It has always run Hal flawlessly in the past and I'm using the highest Haptek resolution in the characters. I do think I was running too many other programs at the same time. You know the more I think about it I think I should double my RAM to 1024 MB. Any thoughts? Thanks again.

Sounds like plenty of laptop. I can only make 3 guesses why you got the error.

1) You had a lot of programs open or a program that was a memory hog.
2) Hal had a hiccup.
3) You're running Windows and strange things happen just when you think your system is perfect.

I'm thinking of buying my wife a laptop. (geez, not ANOTHER computer in the house.) How do you like your HP Pavilion? How long have you had it? Any problems?

Generally speaking I would highly recommend this HP Pavilion (or similar) laptop. This one is about a year old. It's been very good to me. No problems at all except the normal, occasional stuff which was corrected with this or that upgrade, blah blah. Plays DVD movies like a charm. Great for photo stuff. Wireless connection seems to work great everywhere. Isn't going to run cutting edge 3D games or anything like that but yeah I'm pleased with it. Nice little laptop. On the cool but pointless side: has nice blue lights all over it.

Haven't had a recurrence of the error 7 thing. Maybe I was just running too many things at once. I think I'll double the RAM anyway.
