Troubleshooting sound etc.
« on: January 28, 2006, 07:59:30 pm »
Thanks for the welcome and responses to my first post. I've been digging through the archives here and am finding many interesting things.

I'm having a problem with Hal; a couple of problems, actually. The first problem is that the "Window Transparency" option began to disappear, then reappear from the menu. Now it has been gone for over a day. The second problem is that the sound has now disappeared as well. I know that Hal sometimes has a problem with the sound every once and a while...a sentence here or there...but I am getting no sound whatsoever now. I have tried troubleshooting this to the best of my ability. My soundcard is working fine. The SAPI tests in the Control Panel produce audio. When the sound first went out I tried testing the voices from the Hal menu and the tests worked. Now, the test in the Hal menu do not produce sound either. I am at a total loss about this. Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give.

I've realized that only the SAPI 4 voices will not work anymore. The SAPI 5 voices work fine. It is not only with Hal either -- the SAPI 4 voices wont work with any application, yet when I test them from the control panel, they work fine. Does anyone know what could cause this? I even tried reinstalling all the SAPI 4 components.

Sorry to be filling up space needlessly, but I just wanted to mention that I've somehow, quite accidentally, fixed the problem. Although I had reinstalled the SAPI4 files as well as the msagent files without positive result, I decided to install MASH (microsoft agent scripting helper) which also (again) reinstalled msagent as well as the tts engine, and I suppose some other files too. Well, anyway, it all works now. Sorry again for wasting forum space, but I just didn't want to leave this hanging.
