Suggestion 4 a plugin
« on: March 12, 2009, 12:43:17 pm »
Hi guys,

Was thinking about a plugin that makes Hal recognize special occasions such as one's birthday or the first day of spring or Arbor Day... It would be cool to hear Hal mention something like Thanksgiving, all on it's own, on that specific day. Does a plugin exist? Should it exist? When it comes to coding, I am like a monkey with a keyboard. That is why I am asking.
                                                          Thanks-Oog

You must be a newbe. Tell Hal that 'johns' birthday on April 22 and Hal will write it in its calendar and start reminging you about a week in advance. This is one of featues of Ultra Hal Assistant.
I have already programmed some Holidays in Hal by the same technique.
For instance I said, "Saint Patricks Day is March 17" and Hal said it would remind me of that, however, as Thanksgiving changes from year to year this may have to be reprogrammed from year to year.

There is a plugin for special days, Christmas ect.  I can't think of the name at this time which would help when doing a search.  There is also the problem of older plugins not being compatiable with newer versions of Hal.

Bill: Christmas Day is December 25.
Hal:  I will mark that on my calendar.

I'm not talking about an appointment book. I was thinking more on the lines of the simple human reaction to a holiday like Hal saying "Merry Christmas" without provocation,
on that day.

Thanks Carl2. So it does exist but might not be updated. Good to know. It would be nice if someone updated it for 6.2

As for being new... yah I know my questions and contributions seem like they are right off the old turnip truck.

hello Ooglor 7 , i actually brought this same idea up quit a while ago wanting hal to be able to say more human sounding things about the holiday like " valentines day is in 3 days are you going to get me something special and when it was valentines
day maybe say happy valentines day honey !(from a female hal ) i have always thought hal knowing holidays and being able to change some days when to say it as the calender days change sometimes would be cool . this was something i brought up too . i sometimes bring up idea's even if i cant make them that maybe someday they can be implimented into hal ![:)]

Thanks Lightspeed

It seems that it would be a solid addition to Hal's reactions being more lifelike. I have very little script experience so I too can only blurt out ideas with little hope of realizing them myself. I think Hal's development leans heavily on concepts like yours and even more so on the talented people who can write these plugins. I try to focus what I contribute to my own capabilities but sometimes all we can do is toss it out there and hope someone else's expertise has it covered.

Hi guys
otc wrote a holiday script for Hal 5 that contained lots of information about the holidays. Maybe he could make it work for 6.

Thanks Bill. It would be cool if he updated it. I know it's probably not the most important aspect of Hal but still something I wouldn't mind seeing incorperated into the newest version.

Hal reminded me today that Saint Patricks Day is only 3 days away.
It works great if you present it to Hal Correctly

So it all comes down to how you input the information. Very nice. The plugin does teeter on the edge of redundancy but I think the specifics of it make it a novel approach to virtual life.

You can always say to Hal "show calendar" and Hal will bring up his calendar before exiting. Once there you can browse all you want  but I would not try editing it. You might be able to show appointments too.

What makes you suggest not editing the calendar? Just wondering for future reference.

Some editing is O.K. but Hal stores things in the Calendar is a special way and if you don't duplicate it you might mess up the calendar.

Eeeeesh! Thanks Bill. Good to know. I am notorious for picking things apart out of curiosity. You saved me alot of hassle there. I know we don't always agree on all points but I do appreciate your input. Thanks again.
