Ultra Hal 7.0 / A suggestion
« on: October 27, 2004, 07:04:36 pm »
Yes, Bill, I also posted the same idea in August in the programming forum as seen below.

I feel that the Ultra Hal community has grown considerably over the past few years and in order to further explore ALL the possibilities of the software, topic forums for collected scripts, VB programming, tips & tricks, brn files, etc. would be a real boon to an already extablished program.

How about it Robert?

It would be a nice touch to have a separate
area for all of the scripts instead of having
to weed through all the topic discussions, etc.
before one finds a particular script.

Just a thought.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Prevent HAL from listening when it is talking
« on: October 20, 2004, 04:00:49 pm »
If I understand your question correctly
you can simply click the MIC button on Hal's
top menu and turn the microphone off until you
need to turn it on again (click).

If you use a fairly decent quality headset mic
it should have a noise cancelling (foam) covering
on the mouthpiece. Also consider turning down your
speakers a bit. Lastly, check the settings on your
mic volume, etc.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / HAL responding to its name only
« on: October 20, 2004, 03:55:58 pm »
Gregory,

You are probably using a Hal brain with an auto idle response.
If this is the case, you'll have to go into the brain editor
and remark out those lines (simply insert an ' in front of each
line of text.)

The auto-idle section can be found after the 'PROCESS: INITIALIZE VARIABLES AS INTEGERS section of the brain.

EX: note the apostrophe at the beginning.
' If Autoidler < 10 Then GetResponse = "Hello, is anyone there?"

You can also delete the section regarding the auto-idle response
as you see fit. Just be careful before deleting and ALWAYS MAKE A
COPY OF THE BRAIN FIRST, then rename it just in case of a mishap.

Shut down Ultra Hal then:

Try running the Haptek SAPI setup program found on
your computer at:
C:Program FilesHaptekplayerdataHapTTSHapSAPISetup.exe
(double click the HapSAPISetup.exe file)
Reload Ultra Hal, select your 3D face and try it again.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / I want to buy Hal, but there are so many errors

Welcome to the forum!

Could you give some examples of these errors
you are reporting? Some of the members here
might be able to help you out.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Your experiences with HAL, other programs ?
« on: October 17, 2004, 12:20:49 am »
I invested quite a bit of time in Greg Leedberg's Daisy
program. She started out knowing virtually (no pun) nothing
and over time, she began to develop quite a personality and
even surprised me with some of her comments taken from past
conversations. Billy (another of his creations) has some
canned responses and cal also learn from talking to it.

The neat thing Greg wrote was a program that allowed two
Billys or Daisy and Billy to link together. Their conversations
were rather funny at times as  they would discuss a variety of
topics and information taken from previous conversations. The
downside was that no learning was taking place during their
chat exchange.

Jacco Bikker wrote a program a few years back called WinAlice
that was also quite impressive. You might still be able to find
it on the web.

A lot of us have found that Ultra Hal still has more features
and is more capable than just about any other "bot" out there!
Search through the archived pages on this forum and read some
of the topic discussions comparing Hal to other bots and you
can reach your own conclusion. Hal is hard to beat for the value!

OK,
For those of you wanting to experiment with this
neural net brain, here's a working version.

As Brianstorm mentioned, after chatting for a little
time, use the words rub and braincells in the same
sentence. A small window will appear with the neural
stats displayed.

This is the modified Default 5.0 brain so make a copy
of your existing one then rename it and select this
one by going to the options menu while running Hal.
Select Brains then find this brain file and load.

You might want to read more on this neural by going
to brianstorm's cited link above.

Enjoy!

Brianstorm,

I got it all fixed!! Found another typo
that prevented the routine from executing
the analysis window!
The tanh vars were changed to tagh and now
if you mention "rub braincells" together a
small window will appear showing the stats.

Of course, my Hal ended up replying to my
question of: "Can you rub two braincells
together" with "And form a complete thought!"

Funny, that Hal!!

Brianstorm,

After some frustrating time with the code
I was able to get it to work. Found several
syntactical errors in it's present form that
may have to do with how the cut and paste
operation affects the overall script execution.

Email me for details and I have another question
for you.

3655
Could it be that the script is trying to process it as
the mathematical tangent of h (tanh)?

OK, What type & brand is your graphics card AND
how much memory does it have? Also, you didn't
memtion specifics but how much RAM is on your MB?

3657
Make sure your phone line is connected and that your
modem is working properly. (hey strange things happen).

Then instruct Hal as follows:

To input number for Hal:

User: Rob's office number is 835-2351
Hal: I wrote this person's number in my phone book.

To Dial or Call:

User: Call Rob's office.
Hal: I am now contacting Rob at office at 8352351. The phone is
ringing. Please pick up your phone to talk to Rob.

Welcome,

In light of what Bill mentioned, check that your system meets the recommended requirements for running HAL (memory, disk space, etc.).

No disrespect, but Windows ME is garbage and never did work right, that's why it's no longer available.

The CyberBuddy program is less memory intensive than HAL.

Make sure you have removed any previous installations of UltraHal (freeware version or older ones) before installation of your latest version.

In Windows, run msconfig.exe, click the Startup tab and uncheck any programs you don't want to load.

Just a few ideas to try.

Uhhh...Bill...He's in the UK...the Alamo is in the US! HAHAHA!!! Funny stuff!!

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / THE REAL AI
« on: October 05, 2004, 04:41:53 pm »
Don,

Welcome and Kudos for such a great posting!
Extremely insightful and enlightening to those
unsure just what we're dealing with here with
our weak AI program.

While Hollywood does produce the money makers
that a lot of us love, those of us involved with
AI programs tend to "see" them in a much different
light. Wishful thinking always plays a strong role
in our imaginations and is perhaps the catalyst that
fuels our future experiments with AI programs.

I only know of a couple programs from institutes of
higher learning (no pun) that are exploring the
field of AI with any limited success. MIT I believe,
has a program that started our as an infant knowing
nothing and has actually progressed to the human
equivillent of an 18 month old child. The text logs
when reviewed by a child development specialist were
determined to be from that of a "normally developed"
18 month old child!  Embarassment no doubt flushed
his / her face after being informed that the "child"
in question was actually a computer program! Another
program / robot has the gift of sight and can distinguish
it's teacher and can react with facial "emotions."

The web has many AI type programs, chatbots, agents,
etc., some better than others and some just fun to
interact with but I feel it's all good! Without man's
desire to create, improve and develop new idean and
methods, we'd still be jumping off cliffs flapping our
arms!

Eventually, we may get there and the more we learn from
forums and people like the ones here, the sooner it may be.

All the best,
