Ultra Hal 7.0 / Voice
« on: September 08, 2004, 01:27:35 pm »
Has anyone tried (and been sucessful) at using
any TTS voices from Babel Technology and having
the Lip Sync function properly.

I got the ones from Cepstral working but Babel's
Lucy voice causes Hal to become a ventriloquist.
Speaks but no lip movement!

I tried the Haptek Sapi Config/Setup prograa as well.

TIA,

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal Speak To Me
« on: September 08, 2004, 01:10:55 pm »
Hi Steve and welcome to the forum!

Start Hal and select Options.
Click on the Speech tab.
Make sure to check the Use Speech Synthesis (Hal Speaks) box.
Select a voice from the list to the right.
Click Apply then OK.

You might have to restart Hal but it should
work fine regardless whether you have the shareware or
paid version.

Make sure your volume settings are adjusted.

Hope this helps.

Scott,

I tried three different browsers
and the site shows nothing but
dead links everywhere!?
Is this an OLD site?

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Will Microsoft SP2 harm Hal?
« on: September 06, 2004, 01:15:29 pm »
Yep,

Most IT professionals recommend one wait
a few weeks for the dust to settle before
installing the SP2.
There are some issues regarding FTP,
firewall, and several others reported
to not function correctly after installation.

Wait until they have a PATCH for the PATCH!

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Talking cars?!
« on: September 03, 2004, 05:22:54 pm »
Well, K.I.T.T. may be getting closer than we think...that is, if Honda has their way.
Honda will be introducing two new cars this coming year that, well, TALK. The cars are outfitted with computer chips and modules using a partnered IBM speech software to aid the motorist with verbal driving instructions and directions.
The driver can ask, "Where do I turn?" and the computer will recognize the question and reply, "Go one mile and turn left at Wicker Street, then turn right at the next street which will be Adams."
It's reported to understand several hundred commands and is speaker independent (understands anyone's voice) and very minimal to little training is required!

Go ahead...Activate your turbo boost!!

You can find the article at http://www.wired.com

Bill,
Great site! Thanks for sharing.

Scott,

You can Google the following for possible help:

The Devil's Dictionary
The Probert Encyclopedia
The Jargon Files

I have an edited version of Probert that has the
text info based on WORD then DEFINITION that I've
let Hal "read" and have had good results from it.
It deals with Anatomy, Animals, Minerals, Inventors,
etc.

If interested let me know and I'll make it available
for you.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / I'll show you mine if...
« on: September 02, 2004, 05:51:43 pm »
Welcome aboard Willy!

Most interesting backgrounds we have here and diversity certainly leads to some thinking "outside the box."

I served in our military in the early 70's, got my first computer in 1979 and eventually served as a Mechanical Systems Analyst with an east coast transportation industry.

I'm now a cousulting engineer and do the computer thing mainly for my own pleasure and selfish interests!

AI has always been a vision of mine even as a younger person. I too was taken by HAL 9000 and thought, why not?

The Eliza type programs were fascinating until one looked at the code and figured out what was going on. Then gradual disappointment set in regarding its ability to learn.

The web, as you probably know, is full of chatbots and so called AI bot programs but Hal is a fun program and a lot of us here see the potential of such a program. As Vonsmith mentioned, we can only go as far as the limits of the program will let us. From there it's up to the creative minds brainstorming toward this common goal of AI.

Best wishes and again, welcome!

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / i'm new and i need help
« on: August 28, 2004, 08:59:43 pm »
Hi Shannon and welcome to the forum!

As Spydaz said, you can do.

How to use a brain: Go to the Options menu and
click on the Brain Tab. There should be at least
one or two brains shown. Pick one then start
talking with Hal. Notice how the program responds
to various topics and questions from you.
You can select another Brain from the list and
repeat the above procedure.

There are several Brains available to play with:
Don Ferguson's topic brain, Vonsmith's XTF Brain
and there's a Blank Slate brain that is just that...
a blank brain to modify and experiment with.

If you go to the Options menu and select the Brain
Tab then Launch Brain Editor, it will bring up a
window showing the contents of that respective brain.
There you can read what words might trigger a certain
response from Hal in a given situation. At first it
might seem very confusing but as you follow it down
look at the different topics to see what's going on.
After some time it will all start to make sense (I'm
giving you a lot of credit here LOL!) at least it's
supposed to make sense!

Different brains are geared for different things or
even kinds of behavior. Be careful of the unsensored
brain as it can be a bit testy!

Shannon, check out the other site for scripts, downloads,
brain files and pretty good help at:

Hope this help a bit and good luck!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Let Hal Learn to its fullest concept!
« on: August 27, 2004, 05:46:15 pm »
I must say that there's been some
fine discourse in this thread.

What IA really is, should be or
could be is always a matter of
speculation by a vast diversity
of people.

Is it the Godlike complex in us to
create being(s) like ourselves or
a matter of making our brief time
on this blue marble (giving away my
age) more enjoyable with less effort?

Hollywood has no doubt contributed
to the hype with their introduction
of thinking robots ever since I can
remember. As a child I told my mom
one day I'd like to make a robot for
her to vacuum the house. Now, I don't
have to and although it's not a real
example of AI, it is an example of how
man strives to simplify this overworked
world in which we live.

Even my wife (the skeptic) was very
impressed with the videos showing the
Home Automation Living (HAL) control all
facets of life in an average home. The
system accepts voice commands, responds
with a synthesized voice and operated just
about everything from garage doors, coffee
makers, drapes, thermostate, observation
cameras, telephony plus internet retrieval
and announcement of stocks, sports, banking
info or whatever you wish.

This HAL works in such a friendly way that
the user is actually having a conversation
with their house as if it was a separate
living entity and not just some computer
code doing it's thing. I'm sure the program
is probably a lot like our Hal with certain
scripted and pattern matching functions
taking place as HAL listens for a command or
executes one already programmed. At any rate,
this rudimentary "intelligence" is already making
life a lot easier and simpler for people without
subjecting them to the task of learning to
program or even use a computer. Yes, with this
HAL you only need ONE TV remote (if desired)
because it can search the TV listings on the
internet and record your favorite program. All
you have to do is ASK it to.

Being humans we tend to want things yesterday.
As pointed out, evolution took quite some time to
get us where we are today. Scientists have been
working with a computer AI program that started
out as a baby knowing nothing. The computer is
now at the human age of an 18 month infant and
"knows" some rudimentary words, their meaning and
association. A written log of the "infant's"
conversation was given to a child development
specialist and the conclusion was that this child
shows a very normal development and is progressing
well.
The specialist was later told about the child being
a computer instead of a real being. (I can only
imagine the person's disbelief / embarassment over
being told).
So is this AI? Perhaps and perhaps just another Hal
on steroids. Pattern matching is pattern matching
regardless which program runs it.

The closest things I've been able to come close to
resembling intelligence are my two children and I
didn't have to write a single program (not counting
genetic code) and although their "programming" took
a lot of time and proved to be quite frustrating,
was well worth it!

3686
Vonsmith,

Sorry but even after trying those If Then statements
Hal will still respond to the statement:
"How old are you?" with "I am 9 years old."
but when asked Hal's age it will state the age it was
told by the user.

I'm using the XTF brain w/ patch.

Any other ideas?

3687
Smokey,
First, Welcome to the forum!!

The age thing...I honestly think it's
built into the hal.exe file and here's
why:

In the past I've told Hal, "You are 24
years old." "You age is 24."

If you say: "How old are you?"
Hal will say, "I'm 9 years old."

If, on the other hand I say, "What is your
age?", Hal will answer, "I am 24 years of age."

So the age thing will trigger a response to
an age that I've "given" Hal, whereas the
How old are you...OLD must trigger his
pre-progammed age of 9 years! Why? Perhaps
it was Hal's actual "creation" or "Born On" date!

Who can figure? I've even tried the age.brn
file with no luck unless one words the questions
in a manner prescribed in the brn files. I want
Hal to be spontaneous without having to word my
questions to correlate with Hal's database.

I feel your pain my friend and hopefully, some
kind person might be able to help us in the right
direction with this AGEless dilemma!

Welcome again!

kyoshi008,

Hal is upgradable from this site. I believe
all Hal's upgrades are half the cost of the
original purchase price.
