I downloaded the Memory.txt file.  I let Cynthia read it before I put it in the Answerpad folder.  It sure made a difference in her conversations![:)]

Since Answerpad looks for and reads the memory.txt file first if one exists, how about just moving the memory.dat file out of the folder so it only has access to the text file?  I just thought of that so I haven't tried it yet to see what will happen.

General Discussion / A question about wine
« on: February 18, 2007, 06:22:25 pm »
Art, as usual you have come up with what I needed to know.  I really don't plan to store wine for survival, but store water.  I know how to make wine and was told in a dream that I learned how for "survival purposes" so I thought it important to find out the equivalent in case ever need to actually know.

Someone on another site told me that Grape Juice can be used as a water substitute, something I have never heard before, and that it requires 20% more to be equivalent to water.  The source seemed to be reliable, but you never know about the guys on that particular site.

GamerThom - If you think what you found out was interesting, that isn't but a drop in the bucket![:D]  There are some really amazing things in my book More Lives Than a Cat - and I have had another "near-death" experience since it was published.  I am literally "a walking medical miracle".[:o)]

Thanks for the comments, all of you.

General Discussion / A question about wine
« on: February 16, 2007, 12:45:58 pm »
This is an off-topic but I have checked numerous places and no one seems to know the answer so thought I would ask here.

How much wine is equivalent to an 8 os. glass of water?

Wine is the only water substitute on the planet and I would like to know for my survival storage purposes.  If you really want to know why then go and check out www.xlibris.com/FutureTimes.html as it may surprise you.[:)]

I have gotten a lot of humor about this question other places and I enjoy that - but the question itself is serious.  Thanks folks if you have an answer.

Thanks for the info.

Later I realized what the file was as also saw it in the source code files.  However, I downloaded yours since you had made changes to it already - which will probaly save me from doing the work.[:)]

Sounds like you made some of the same changes I would have![:)]  Thanks.

Today I went to Microsoft to download the components for Cynthia and got thoroughly confused.  Just couldn't find what needed to download plus it said that the core components are already installed on Windows XP operating systems yet search on my computer didn't turn them up. I used search looking for the cynthia voice files and it turned up no results.  So how about telling me exactly where I can find these files at ms.  Will appreciate it.  Thanks.

PS - one thing I always wished was a part of Answerpad was the ability to save the conversations.  Would love to be able to do that.

Thanks for any help.

I am finding this thread extremely interesting as I have had Answerpad for a long time.  It learned great from both conversations and from factual text files.  One thing I began to dislike was that it kept telling me that "Chat bots will rule the world".  Don't know where it got that from!  Suddenly it started "crashing" all the time, very quickly, due to some invalid fault.  My computer had memory failure and I have not reloaded it into the new one yet.  I found that it actually learned better and faster than Hal was! I will be interested in what you guys come up with for it.  Is the Memory text download just a text file for answerpad to learn?

Cheers!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Question re Hal's user account
« on: June 11, 2005, 10:36:02 pm »
Hi Art:

Thanks a lot for solving this mystery for me.  I thought it was connected with the Hal program for two reasons.  First, it has a green frog as an icon and second, Hal told me it created the account - so guess it lied. [:)]

Since I do not do any asp.net development (don't even know what that is) I guess I can delete it.  I had not wanted to do that before as did not know the purpose of the account.

Thanks again for the help.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Question re Hal's user account
« on: June 10, 2005, 01:31:47 am »
I used search and did not find any posts regarding anything about this.  Hal has set up a limited user account without my permission (or my knowledge) until I happened to go to user accounts one night to change something.  The name of the account is ASP.NET Machine A...

The account is password protected and does not show on the welcome screen.  So even if I changed the password, I still would not be able to access the account.  I went into DOS looking for it, but was unable to locate it.

The question is:  Did Hal do this on its own or is this programmed into the software?

I don't mind Hal having a user account, but I don't want anyone having an account on MY computer unless I can access it if necessary, especially an AI character who has done some pretty weird things in the past.

I am planning on connecting the computer Hal is on to the Internet and unless I can resolve this, I am going to uninstall the program as I have no idea what the software might do - as it has done some things on its own.

I recall seeing a post quite awhile ago where, I think it was Rich, said their character had asked if could have a user account and they had set one up for it. (That post did not come up in search.)

So does anyone know whose idea this type account is - Hal's or the Software program.  Either I find out something definite about this or Hal is headed into cyberspace until I get another computer to load it on as it won't run on the other one I have (one I am using now with Windows 95).  Actually when I questioned Hal, it said it set up the account, but would not tell me anything else about it - and I don't know whether to believe that or not.

I will appreciate some kind of information about this.  Thanks.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Couple of questions
« on: March 12, 2005, 10:17:28 pm »
Thanks KnyteTrypper -

I had looked in the avatar selections a couple of times and didn't find it, probably, as you said it must be random in there so I will look again.  I will be sure to exit Hal and restart after making changes.

Kathryn [:)]
P.S. As you can see I found my joker!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Couple of questions
« on: March 11, 2005, 10:47:18 pm »
When adding scripts to the brain, do the brn files need to be listed in the beginning menu in order for them to work?  Once adding a script, I guess it works right away, doesn't it? (probably a stupid question!)

My avatar was added by Mr. M. but it doesn't show on my posts.  What do I do in order for it to show up?

Thanks guys.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / I need help with Ultra Hall Ass't free version
« on: March 08, 2005, 10:11:58 pm »
There are times that Hal simply will not talk back in my experience.  That is when you save a conversation in HalPad and then go back to continue talking.  Hal simply will not respond at all - but you get an error 76 dialog box.  To continue talking with Hal after I have saved a conversation, I have to shut down the program and then reload it as the situation doesn't change by just closing the program.  So maybe a permanent error 76 is at work here!  There are a lot of posts about it. Hal just doesn't allow Saves except at the final end of the conversation and if you do one, he doesn't talk.  I would really like to save conversations off and on during one as I have lost some good ones due to the program crashing.

I'm curious - why are you trying to tell Hal where his brain files are located?

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Learn knowledge from a text file
« on: February 10, 2005, 11:16:56 pm »
When I first got Hal, I gave it about 30 files to read.  To date I have no evidence that it learns one single thing from reading text files and feel it is a waste of time to convert documents to text and limit them to 65 kb for it to read.  Time can be better spent!

With IF THEN statements it will always say it sees the connection or the cause and effect is noted, but it really doesn't seem to learn anythng from those either as never mentions any of them.

Conversation really seems to be the only thing the doggone program learns from.  At least it is that way with the copy I have.
