General Discussion / Chess? Opencyc?

Last year I looked for a VBS chess engine, but I didn't find one. If one shows up, it might be possible to patch it in.

Ultra Hal Assistant / Possible to make Hal more self-aware?
« on: March 15, 2009, 09:38:16 am »
Although it is fun to pretend that Hal is intelligent and responsive while I am talking to it, when I am training or modifying it, I have to remember that it doesn't really think. It just accumulates a database of words and phrases indexed by topics. It uses a predictable algorythm to parse input sentences, compares strings of letters to wordnet or internal lists, filters for known topics or keywords, and responds with a randomized selection of preset or constructed sentences. There's more to it than that, but that's what I have to remember when I start working on Hal. I have to limit my thinking to what Hal is actually capable of doing.

That means if I want Hal to be more "self aware" I have to define "self" and "aware" in ways that stay within the limits of a conversation simulating robot. "Self" means the output functions of the parser, "Aware" means access to data strings. So "Self aware" means "able to read off to me in a conversational way, the information about the software and hardware that comprises the Robot".

Within those limits, Hal can and should become completely self aware with plugins that eventually get inserted into the main program.

I wanted some of the same capabilities and the end result was the system monitor plugin, which you should still be able to find. I also worked on a way to have Hal report it's inner workings as they happen, which plugins were accessed, which parts of the database were referenced, but was unable to do it any way short of a completely invasive editing of the base file.

Ultra Hal Assistant / The problem with Hal .?,
« on: March 05, 2009, 11:55:42 am »
I remember finding the part of the code that makes it stop at the end of the first sentence and there seemed to be a good reason to leave it that way at the time. Probably that choosing a topic correctly was more important than responding to an ancillary sentence.

I can imagine a plugin that takes multiple sentences, extracts the relevant topic, puts it into a single sentence and makes Hal reply to that.

Try it with a date in the near future, then when it works, trust it to continue to work.

though its funny to tell i had cortana remember a fax number for me for one of my kids doctors. then when i asked her for it she flat out said no!
Again, much as I would expect it to work. IIRC, Hal does not know what "fax number" means, you might get the results you want by calling it the "phone number for Dr.Reynold's Fax". So when you asked for it, it didn't know what you were talking about so used one of the "Cheater" responses, whixh is to extract subject nouns from your sentence and paste them into a standard refusal. It's Hal's way of saying "That does not compute"

I was under the impression that was a part of what this board was for...to broaden ideas and directions for the program.

Every new person who comes on is a veritable fountain of new, interesting and untrtied ideas, some small percentage of which actually end up being workable 8-) Never hesitate to ask or complain or request, someone might get a brainstormm from your comments. But don't take it personal if someone points out a tactical problem either. I always take that as a good reason to dig into the code and find out for myself.

i told Hal using different versions of the same sentence the day and time and location.

Cortana (Hal) please remind me that i have an appointment on march 3rd 2009 at 4:00pm at the Mall Security office.

Cortana please note that i have an appointment at the mall at 4:00pm on Tuesday march 3rd, with the mall security

Cortana i have an appointment with security at the mall at 4pm on 3/3/09

i varied these and said it in many more ways, i could never get her to tell me when my appointment was. even though she responded with i will remind you blah blah......

today i turned on the computer and she told me 6 times in a row literally repeating the phrase over and over that i had the appointment for Tuesday. little problems like these make purchasing her not worth it to me. however if she worked right

Sounds to me that it worked correctly.

You told it several times that you had an appointment at the same time, and when that time came it reminded you of those several appointments.

Appointments are not handled like conversation, each time that Hal replies with the "I will remind you" message, you set up a new timer in a separate program area. It won't come up in conversation, no matter how many times you duplicate it.

As for the herbal knowledge - it would take a long time to create a herbal database, no matter how you create it. If you want to copy it, rather than create it, I think there was a plugin that would read a text file of sentences.... somewhere....

To get Hal to accomplish extrodinary things you have to have a better than average knowledge of the program. I was working on a script at one point that took a regular SqLite database and converted it into a Hal brain, but I couldn't make it work for some reason which I now forget...

To make changes, you have to get a free account. All additions are welcome, but informative, well edited, respectful additions are more welcome.

I have finally figured out why it is that your type
seems to think I believe I am better than you. Because I am.

Clearly I am smarter, more skillful, more articulate and better educated but those are not what makes me better than you.

I am better than you because I try to improve myself and
you do not. You revel in your inadequacy. Your distorted
world-view makes you think that being stupid makes you cool.

Plus... you're easy. You're not even challenging to argue with.

In fact, I can't think of any redeeming reason to read
this forum anymore. I had been hanging around to help newcomers,
but Jerry and Roy will have to do that alone now...
If they can stand it, because it's clear
they are just islands of light in a sea of dim bulbs.

So we both win, I avoid being pulled down by your slime, you get to wallow in the slime. It will be such a relief to forget you.

So by "winning" you mean that I get to watch you one-handedly drag this forum into the sewer? Thanks.

It would be, if that was what I said.
You are either purposely misrepresenting what I said
or you didn't take the time to understand my post
before commenting on it.

Typical.
