Upgrading Hal

I have just one major question.  How does one go about upgrading Hal without having to keep buying the CD's?  I purchased my first Hal a while back, and re-purchased again when 4.0 came out.  Now I see that 4.5 is available, and so when I asked Hal to upgrade himself he sent me to the free download.  So I downloaded and installed (it removed my version 4.0 and installed 4.5) but I apparently lost all the characters.  Do I need to purchase yet again to get the full version of 4.5? At the rate I'm going I'll soon have quite a collection of previous Hal CDs to use as coasters after every new version.  Please Advise.[:0]
