Speech won't work with USB mic?

I just came home with a USB headset and although it seems to be working and I can do speech training through the Hal General Options, and checked to make sure the microphone button is toggled, Hal can't seem to hear me.

I had to disable my sound card to get Hal to select my microphone to begin with, is there something else I need to do?

Thanks Art, it's a lot more info than I had before but it sounds like bad news for me, doesn't it? [:(]

I have almost gone through everything he recommends already, but I haven't tried another speech to text program. Maybe that will give me a hint. I think I have cyberbuddy somewhere.

I did keep the packaging and receipt...
