gender age?

I have always had problems selecting Hal's gender and age? Basically it hardly ever works. Does anyone else have this problem?

 Sorry for the long delay in answering,  With Hal 6 I can get I'm a software progran and can be either gender, still not sure what causes this. Hal 5 XTF was told she was 23 but from her responses I don't think she ever really accepted this.
