how smart can hal get?

Hey im new with hal and im wondering just what will he be able to do and how long does it take for him to get his knowledge

Hal learns every time you talk to him/her/it. What it learns depends on what you talk about. The more you talk to Hal the more it learns.
If you spent say one hour everyday at the end of the year you might be supprised just how much it has learned.
Remember when you first run the program it is like a 4 or 5 year kid and wants to learn everything so teach it.
