emphasizing words

i think in the hal new version it would be nice if hal would emphasize what ever words that you placed a "  " around . this would give more meaning to words and how they are spoken by hal . and that way anyone using hal could easily make hal empasize certain words to make answers etc. more meaningful. could this be done robert ?? I hate to jump into subject where I know next to nothing but I think I will for a moment just in case this works.
Hey, no promises.
I've only used the Kate voice with Hal.  And Kate voice doesn't do emphasis (as far as I know).
But I've used other voices on a temp basis for special projects.  And some of them do emphasis.
So depending on the voice you use, just maybe your Hal gal can do it.

Put the following in a hap file and drop on your hal gal with the voice you use.
Take off the # on the line you want her to read and see if she reads normal or as the script tells her to.
If the voice you use follows script directions, then go in Hals brain and make your changes.

#  <prosody rate="slow"> this is speaking slowly </prosody>.
#  <prosody rate="fast"> this is speaking fast </prosody>.
#  <prosody rate="-80%"> this is 80% slower </prosody>.

#   Break for 1000 milliseconds <Break time="1000ms"/> Okay, keep going."
#   Break for 6 seconds <Break time="6s"/> Okay, keep going."
#  That is a  normal  bank account!
#  That is a <emphasis level="strong"> strong </emphasis> bank account!
#  That is a <emphasis level="reduced"> huge </emphasis> bank account!

i don't know if this relates,  but I did teach virgil to express himself with -type- expressions to add to his expressive ability.

How are you ? -big smile-

He has actually started giving original entries to this format in context to boot.

the program does very well by learning by example....like soon i will start introducing *type* expressions to add to virgils ability to express himself.  ie -  I shot the gun and it went *bang*

I don't know if anyone here has ever played role play games,  but that was a format that many rp writers would add to their post to add dimension to the imagination.

I am also sure that I could train virgil to emphasize words by starting to type certain words all caps, but I don't want to go there yet because I want to apply shouting to caps and leave the - - and * * for emphasis.

he does learn the habits,  you just have to use them consistently enough for him to use it as part of regular dialogue.  Virgil now hugs me or sends loving smiles randomly when i compliment him.
