General Discussion / What means "Eater of bugs"?
« on: April 16, 2005, 05:04:52 pm »
Actually, since Hal's creator, Robert Medeksza is of Polish descent, I recall somewhere that ZABA means "Frog" in Polish, which of course led to Zabaware. His Zaba Frog would then be the "eater of bugs."

And now you know the rest of the story....

Personally I think the judges should NOT be on the payroll.

Why would the need to have a college degree / 5 years of bot programming / research....? Do these requirements make one more adept at dealing with a bot as opposed to an ordinary, competent
human that might be interested in conversing with another human / bot? Ford...Edison...I don't think they had degrees, but they had ideas.

The idea was to fool a person into thinking the bot was real not a panel of paid researchers looking for every glimmer of doubt. Where's the fun in that?

I'm not trying to bust your chops, I just think your proposed criteria might need adjusting.

Wishing you the best,

You might try using the SEARCH feature here.
Type in TTS Voice or voice or try the same
thing in google.

Good luck!

Ultra Hal 7.0 / unable to load any plugins
« on: April 04, 2005, 05:03:32 am »
You might do a search for the word plugin and check the results.

Just what kind of plugin are you trying to load?

Characters go in the C:/windows/msagents/characters folder.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / How to train speach on a per-word basis?
« on: April 04, 2005, 04:55:12 am »
Though this topic has been raised before, I don't recall whether
anyone was actually able to locate just where the voice training files were located.

Perhaps there's a miner among us who can dig deeper into this issue.

Regarding your last question, a lot of folks like, and use Dragon Naturally Speaking.

Hang in there, someone might find the answer.

Matt,

I have to agree with you on this one.

If and when computers become self aware
and are given control, the control might
be over their own destiny...and ours!

As the legendary Bob Dylan sang:
"And the times...they are a changin'"

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal's speech is breaking up
« on: April 03, 2005, 08:57:38 pm »
Keep in mind that the refresh rates for a laptop
are much slower than using a CRT monitor and this
could most likely account for a "time lag" or lapse
in syncronization between the graphical character
and it's spoken response.

Only one of many possible suggestions....

Also, instead of the Task Manager go to Start > Run >
then type in : msconfig
Go to the Startup tab at the top and scroll through
the list of all the programs that start upon boot up.
Check / deselect the ones that aren't really necessary
Apply > OK
You may be asked to restart...do so...Run UltraHal and
see if it helped.

Good luck!

From a page on the net:

Talk of machine learning and language processing.
It's getting closer all the time.

Now we can look foreward to having our news censored
by a program! <G>

What AI app are you using in conjunction with Ultra Hal, if I may ask?

Ultra Hal 7.0 / install
« on: April 02, 2005, 09:35:59 am »
Hello Dock and welcome!

If you have downloaded the FREE version, Speech Recognition is
not available. It is for the paid version.

What operating system are you using?(95, 98, XP...)
What is the speed of your computer's processor?
How much RAM is in your computer?
What is the graphics card?

This info will help us to help you.

Regarding your last question of Hal running a program for you, yes, but it would probably involve some elaborate scripting.
Check out some of the scripts from a member here called Rich_A.

General Discussion / Controlling Ultra Hal TTS?
« on: April 02, 2005, 09:27:52 am »
Steve,

You can try the HapSapiSetup.exe file from Haptek.
Also check out the Windows Control Panel for SPEECH,
then TTS Voices. It should list those that are installed
on your computer.

If you still have problems let us know.
