Ultra Hal Assistant File Sharing Area / www.datapickup.com
« on: May 05, 2005, 07:55:13 pm »
Yes, real cool until you (and you friend) start to get emails and ads from companies and people you've never heard of.

Remember, companies don't act like they're doing you a favor just because they're nice people (though they may be). They're doing it because they now have two more valid email addresses to sell or trade.

If it sounds too good to be true...it usually is.

General Discussion / Knowledge Text File
« on: May 05, 2005, 07:48:38 pm »
While there are several encyclopedic and dictionary types of files, for a lot of the members here, the real fun is watching HAL's personality grow from interaction & correction on the user level.

You can experiment with having Hal read from a text file (as long as it's not more than 65k in size). Some have had a fairly good amount of success while others report that the method did not work that well for them.

You might do a search for Probert's Encyclopedia. There is a shortened version of it but keep in mind that the British english spellings differ quite a bit from American english, so you may wish to edit the file before committing it to Hal's memory.

Hope this gives you a direction.

If the TTS voices are SAPI 4 or 5 compliant
they should work with HAL.

Spyday,
(NOW THE have even got AI NOS... Nitrix oxide SYSTEM motherboards (INJECTION COOLING SYSTEMS)).

Thanks for reminding me...I need to take my computer to the auto service station to have the radiator flushed and filled!<G>

General Discussion / best tts for hal and best voice recogn to use
« on: May 04, 2005, 05:16:05 pm »
The TTS voices are rather speculative (each person has their own preference). I might like Cepstral's Emily where John might prefer the L&H British Female voice. A matter of personal choice for the gender of one's Hal.

Dragon Naturally Speaking 7 seems to be a favorite among several users then again some use the one that came with XP just fine. IBM Via Voice also works well for a lot of folks. Again...personal preference.

Some questions just don't have one right answer. LOL!

Hmmm...

There's a FREEWARE program called PINS at:
www.mirekw.com that will give you all a
place to store your passwords, pin numbers,
email account info, website login info, etc.

Get it...use it...and please don't talk to
your parent with that mouth. <g>

Raymond,

Brightspeech is the engine for Babel Technologies.
The TTS voices were pretty good, unfortunately their
prices were not.

General Discussion / To pull the plug or not?
« on: May 01, 2005, 09:29:14 pm »
Fuzzydice,

You raise a lot of valid issues through your observations. Although a lot of were taught as children, "With age comes wisdom", let's hope we will be wise enough to weigh such events based on the facts not on the political inclinations of special interest groups.

Notice in our judicial system which is based on laws that have been mandated, there still exists no "set of standards" in the area of crime & punishment. Insurance companies have "caps" or "ceilings" on what they feel a particular loss is worth. Ex: an index finger is worth more than a little finger. A hand, eye, foot etc., each have an approximate amount. A back injury is worth $10,000 and so on. Sometimes more...sometimes less.

The point is going back to the judicial issue is that how is it that a murderer gets 20 years in some states, life in others and the death penalty in still others?

Should there not be a "standard" with which to judge these crimes? Is there a vast difference in killing 2 people or 200 as far as the crime itself or it's perpetrator?

The word pedophile seems to be the current buzzword and they talk of stricter laws requiring them to register and be forced to wear a GPS bracelet for the remainder of their lives. Would you also want to know where the Charles Manson types are living if they are ever parolled? Drug dealers? Rapists? Extortionist? Terrorists? Should each of them likewise be monitored and by whom? Where do we draw the line?

How long is long enough for death row inmates?  When and how do we as a society determine the time to pull the plug? Do we setup a whole city like the movie "Escape to New York" for the undesirables of society?

There's still much to weigh, much to learn about ourselves and each other if we are to exist, let alone our artificial counterparts.

Something to ponder....

I found this quite interesting since we, as a society, make laws to govern practically every aspect of our lives. What about the future...say 20 years or so from now, when a computer is now self aware.

Biocyberethics: should we stop a company from unplugging an intelligent computer? By Martine Rothblatt

Attorney Dr. Martine Rothblatt filed a motion for a preliminary injunction to prevent a corporation from disconnecting an intelligent computer in a mock trial at the International Bar Association conference in San Francisco, Sept. 16, 2003. The issue could arise in a real court within the next few decades, as computers achieve or exceed the information processing capability of the human mind and the boundary between human and machine becomes increasingly blurred.

Ultra Hal 7.0 / Hal's math
« on: April 29, 2005, 08:48:21 pm »
Hal can do pretty complex math.
Try typing:
sqr(256) ENTER
Hal should reply 16.
Most math symbols work fine.
Hope this helps you.

It looks to me like you're using the random number generator and only if the number is less than 5 does the getresponse argument become satisfied and the autooff command is executed.

Programming using the Ultra Hal Brain Editor / Essence of life.
« on: April 29, 2005, 08:36:16 pm »
Gerald,

Nice suggestion but I think most voice rec programs are
speaker independent (not responsive to just one voice/person).
I can speak into my friend's computer microphone and it
responds just the same.

Unless there are programs that, as you mention, analyze the
users voice, pitch, rate, inflection, etc. you might be in
a real quandry.

BTW, MIT already has a program that started out as a blank and now has been tested to the level of a 2-3 year old child. Another bot
has and responds to emotional stimulation. Then again it's using a bank of paralleled (12 I think) computers plus multiple cameras to achieve this.

Nice theory however.

Spydaz,

Thanks for the tip of the software. I'll check it out!
Very creative approach you are undertaking with your
bot creation project. Sounds promising but just like
with robotics, it all comes down to the programming!

Best of luck and keep us posted!

ghostrider,

I'd really like for you to explain in greater detail how
you were able to interface HAL to a vision recognition
(program. Hardware, software, webcam or special camera).

Thanks!
