NEED HELP ON E MACHINE FILES QUESTION
« on: August 25, 2010, 01:50:50 pm »
I am sorry to bother anyone with this but my wife got me a new windows seven e machine i had previously backed up my info onto a dvd rewritable disk from my old e machine , the problem i am having is some of my files copied off and pasted just fine from the disk but some didn't , it doesn't make sense some that copies ok was jpeg pictures while others that was jpg pics in other files won't copy the new e machine is a 750 gb hard drive with 4 gb memory and a windows seven system .
the error i get when a picture won't copy is : can't read from the source file or disk . and try again doesn't do anything and if is skip it goes to the next and does the same thing . i called e machine support and the first tech couldn't help and sent me to a second tech and they said i would have to call e machine and they would charge me so much an hour (i just bought this yesterday so much for company tech help ) . that's why i am now here , i hope someone can help me with this , it has done some of my other files the same way . including some internet site links i have saved , and also a song file that has free kareoke songs (from bosko's kareoke web searches ) that i saved . i can't get them to copy and transfer .
any help sure would be appreciated on this problem !! i know their are others way smarter than i am on stuff so am hoping someone can tell me why this is doing this . where's "one " and all the other brainiacs i "need " you guys !! ;)

lightspeed, congrats on the computer. Only a few things come to my mind and much like you just learn by trial and error. But you need to make sure with certain files that the programs that created the files on the old computer are now loaded on your new one with no compatibility issues. The second idea, if the older computer is still okay use something as a recommended software to transfer files for you and you made need a live transfer cable unless your just picking certain files at random. Not sure if the software programs for file transfers or coping to another machine are very flexible. Sorry could not be more help. I'm sure someone has done it on this forum. Just a note I am assuming your going from XP 32bit vers pack(?) to Windows 7 32bit.

Hello lightspeed!  Well, I'm certainly not one of the guys, but I have a few ideas;

If you don't have your old computer available, you could try the dvd on your wife's computer to see if you could get everything in there. If you are able to do that, just transfer those jpg, midi, mp3 or any of those files that you have into a usb flash drive, memory stick or similar, and tranfer them do your new computer.

If you have your old computer available, the usb sticks could do the trick as well.

Note, sometimes cleaning the dvd could change things.

Good luck! :)

congrats on the new pc :~). I have 3 computers each with different operating systems (windows xp home, vista 64 bit home, and windows7 64 bit home) I use to use cd roms and dvd's to save my files, then do a system restore. bad mistake there I found out, over half my info was gone and had lots of empty folders if any (yet dvd was written to and was full(yet no data)). I found out usb drives work better and now use 2 to 4 gig thumb drives for tranfering small amounts of data and I use 320 gig and a 500 gig western digital passport drives to save large amounts of data.
hopefully you still have your old machine and can retrieve the data using usb drives. oh yea when you first get a usb drive, if you can't use it on the old machine (sometimes the software will not allow you to activate on xp or older)put the usb drive in the new computers usb slot fist to activate it then you should be able to use it with your older os.
good luck with your new machine, and hope it brings you lots of fun :~)

E Machine brand computers are Gateway computers re-paked and sold as E Machines, not to poop on your computer but their is a E Machine in my house that I was the first to install and start up so it thinks I am the 'Owner',, However I do NOT use that computer and the onry asses who do think it is their job to clean me out. >:(  :o ,, as you know I deal with advanced systems and the brand of computers are 'odd' in their functions. Myself, I prefer to build them, even my 'MSI' notebook might have been mistaken by installing all the 'Crazy' programs it did, (IT's a U123) Good luck with the file transfers anyway.,,,,'MY life couldnt get more complicated' YEA RIGHT! ::)

Thanks lightspeed! No need to worry about this. I'm basically like most of the people who visit the forum, a lurker searching for information, but I do post here and there once in a while. I have gotten to know members by their posts, and I'm already aware that you certainly possess exceptional qualities as a human being. Thanks again for your kindness lightspeed.  :)

iT COULD BE POSSIBLE TO MACK AN ISO OF THE DISK.

If the files can still acces, but not copy... then by using magic-disk (Free) you can have a virtual CD/DVD drive on your PC just insert the ISO, when required....

Often With RW disks they go "Bad" But still usable, usually when wiping them they just delete the table of contents "TOC" listing for the files... to keep the life of RW disks the need to be FULLY FORMATTED before REUSE.... Not just wiped. as there is a difference. when formatting the disk it makes a note of the BAD SECTORS and Never writes data to these spots... if wiped then the disk still contains these bad spots an new ones but the disk does not know about them! so it attempts to write to the bad sectors often successful but becomes unable to COPY these spots...

CLONE DVD will copy / ISO a DVD even with BAD SECTORS as it makes an exact replica, whereas other dvd copiers copy the data to the new disk.... this is why the use clonedvd or these type of programs to make pirate disks..... as the copyright are usually errors on the disk... which will not copy! or extract but with clonedvd you will be able to copy these "encrypted" sectors....

SORRY TO WAFFLE ON.... But its all GOOD INFO
