problem with brain editor

Hi  []

We are having problems with the brain editor ..

The problem is with the

>Tools:-
>main knowledge database:-
>question and answer brain:-

freezes on the pictured screen (attached file)
worked fine the first 3 or 5 times used then .. ..
left it to load for 5 hours - thought it had crashed..
tried again and left it for over 9 hours - no luck,
tried it again and left it from wednesday morn till friday,
still no joy .. ..

(task manager shows 1 - 3 % cpu usage)

when we click ok we get :
the file is currently in binary.
in order to save your changes is needs to be recompiled.

If we click - yes - we get :

"run-time error '55'
File already open

we click "ok" and everything closes down.

If we click - No - then :

screen closes - "would you like to save changes made to the entire project before closing it"

clicking either yes or no :

cpu usage changes to 100%
nothing happens for hours, and we get "program not responding" error message .. ..

all other brain editor functions work fine .. ..

Running xp home edition.

Give us the exact name of the file you are trying to edit including its extension. As far as I know the only one that is compiled ends with .exe and you can not edit that file.

 I believe Geminii has already loaded the Hal Default Brain.
He's now trying to view/edit the question / answer file as is
selectable from the TOOLS menu at the top of the brain editor window.

I just loaded the default brain and tried it.
The file took almost a minute to load but it
finally did.

Check for virii, trojans and spyware?

Using Win XP with Service Pack 1?
(SP1 gave me a lot of grief a while back).

Tried reinstalling Ultra Hal?

Check what items are booting at startup.
Start>Run>msconfig.exe (type that in).
Click on Startup Tab at far right.
Go down list and UNCHECK any items you DON'T
want to load when computer boots.

Perhaps if you narrow down any other program
usage, Hal will behave more respectably.

Hi Geminii.
I have a suggestion.
Try looking into your Defbrain folder directly through windows explorer.
check all .brn files in the Defbrain folder and see if there are any files in that folder that don't have proper file extensions.
If a file is unreadable because its corrupt then this kind of file could cause your editor to work real slow because it might be using up a lot of resources trying to open it when it can't.

Secondly. Could we have some spects on the computer you are trying to run hal on.
Motherboard:
CPU Speed:
Video Graphics card if any:
Speed of video graphics card in Mhz:
Type of Hard drive:
Is Hard drive full:
Current Physical memory and amount:
Are you running Directx/OpenGL:
Sound Card if any:
Is Sound Card Accelerated:
Video monitor:
Version of HAL Bot you are running:
Size of files as a whole in Defbrain folder:
Last time ChkDsk /f was run to correct errors:
Last time Defrag was run to correct file placement:
Last time Registry was cleaned and repaired:
Last time Spyware and Adware, Malware was checked:

Just some things to help us better diagnose your problem.

THE MAIN Q&A brainfile IS corrupted


just reinstall the MainQ*A brainfile then try opening...

I have had this before... when i tried the edit his main Brainfile & recompile it.... big mistake

Hi, It sounds to me like your PC is running low on RAM, if you go to the run option from the start menu, type "msconfig" without the "" and press OK you will bring up your system configuration utility, go to the startup tab and click on the disable all button, this will shut down all your background applications, if you are running Windows XP you have nothing to worry about in doing this, if you are not then you need to keep ticks in these boxes, "Load power Profil, Scan Registry, System tray and Task Monitor". Now press apply and then close, your PC will want to reboot, let it do this. Once your PC is back on line, go back to the run option and type "%temp%" again without the "", this will bring up your temp folder, delete everything in this folder and reboot again.. All this done you wil have free`d up enough RAM to be able to use the Brain editor

Sorry about the homework, another think you could check,
go to the start menu, then to the run option (again) type dxdiag and select the display tab, on the right hand side you will get info on your video card drivers. part way down yu will get a virsiopn number, just below this you will have a date. If the date is more than 5-6 month old, go to http://www.nvidia.com and donload and install the latest video card driver, for your card it should be version 6177.
