No, it's to keep you from buying the old versions. They have it, in case you really need it, but they want you to buy the new one.
It's still greed, really, why else be in business if not to make a profit, but it's enlightened greed with a plan.
And it's not a rip off, it's the same price. Windows always sells for the same price as when it came out. That's how they get you to buy the new versions. No sense waiting for the old ones to go down in price. Just because some people lower their price on their old stuff doesn't mean its a rip off if
you don't. Heck, the price on a Monet Painting has gone
up over time.
I saw a copy of Win 2.0 about five years ago for $79 or something, the original price. I asked the guy and he said that MS won't let them mark it down. I should have bought it, it's probably worth more as a collectors item.
