How to choose which Sound Card?
« on: September 03, 2008, 11:02:52 pm »
Hi people,

I guess a quick Intro is in order before I pose my question:

My name is Justin, and like the user named eTellier, I am converting an 82 Trans Am to look like KITT from the Knight Rider TV show. I have recently purchased a Full License for Ultra Hal.

I have three sound cards in the computer I am using for KITT's Voice, and I NEED all three of them, for reasons that previously made for a waaay too long post, before I edited it.

The problem is that although I am able to select which sound card I want Ultra Hal to "Listen" through, using Control Panel> Speech> Speech Regognition tab > Audio Input>, I am unable to select which sound card I want him to TALK out of, when using Control Panel> Speech> Text-to-Speech > Audio Output.

Also, trying to change the sound card options in Ultra Hal does not work either.

So if anyone out there can help me, I'd be extremely grateful [:D]. I want to know exactly how to select the card for his speech output manually - I can follow precise instructions if necessary, and I don't mind modifying a text file or something.

Thanks for your time.

Hi NewmansKnight and welcome to this forum.

I too have more than one sound card; if I was you I would disable the onboard sound preferably from the computers bios if it’s not in there then from windows device manager.

You didn’t say if you are using XP or Vista, if you are using Vista the fix will be similar to XP but I got rid of Vista a while ago and I can’t remember exactly where these settings are.

In XP you need to open up Sound and audio device properties from control panel

Set sound playback default device to your desired card and then set sound recording default device to your desired card, make sure you have a tick in use only default device.

This should work, if it doesn’t open up the sound mixer and make sure that the microphone is ticked in Options, properties recording.

Good luck.

I am using Windows 2000, but have also used Windows XP and had the same problem. But thanks for the reply dude.

I shortened my original post to make it easier to follow. I figure it was way too long.

NewmansKnight,

I have been using a free audio switcher that does not install but runs when you start it and allows auto switching of your sound cards.  You can have hot buttons on your keyboard and can switch the sound cards using them. I also use a "cables to go switcher' that allows me to pick the source and where I want the source to go.(ex.Headphones,speakers,ext.speakers or both).'Quick Sound switch' is the program. Let me know if you need more info.

Just a quick note:
You do have to be sure to close any previous programs that where utilizing that particular sound card before the new selection becomes active. There are times I am listening to a song say in Media player then I want to switch to a movie and use a different sound card for more effect, it will take a second or two and I need to restart Media Player for the new sound card to be active.
