this has nothing to do with hal but i wanted to share it with everyone (don't mean it to be spam just thought some may want the extra security on their pc 's with all the bad stuff online nowdays )  here is a link for a good pc tool it detects stuff that aniviruses etc. don't and its a freeware you do have to manually update the antivirus, etc. software . i used it on mine and it runs very fast scanning files and does them in three phases also put it on my wifes computer .

ppl seem to get around over the years now don't they.

I does preform as it is not a database prog, It is behavioral.
be sure to do your desired settigs.

It has blocked hundreds if not thousands of malware for me and the people I consult.

I hardly ever run a scan, but make sure you look at what it is going to quaranten.Before making a decition.

just a word of warning caangel tried it and had trouble with it it blocked his reote access to another computer he said and he removed it . i never had any problem with it nor did my wife on her pc but we arent doing anthing by remote [:)].

Like I said you have to adjust the sensetivity level and their is a link to what will be quarantened.

I have mentioned this program before and even gave a screenshot of it blocking a hidden proccess.

I just contacted a friend who works for them and he said the latest , improves scan time but sacrafices what is scanned.

Their has been some debate as to how to market it, but if you leave community protection on you will get the updates as of now.

I find this currious as a repost, unless i'm just not living up to your code. I must ask you directly what are your intentions[?]

I have found Vista to be pretty secure with its Firewall, Defender, and Protected Mode.
Money is very scarce here, as I am sure it is everywhere.
How well protected do you think a system would be with all of Vista's security enabled, and just ThreatFire?
I asked on their site, but did not get an answer.

IMO I would run a third party firewall like PC Tools has , I do not know if it will work on vista as I do not know if it is 32 bit or 64? ask them, or I will do it for you if you desire...

Defender just tries to block or allow installs but is too slow, Tea timer from www.safer-networking.org (spybot search and destroy) works much faster and threatfire is even (IMO) the fastest especially with the sensitivity cranked up all the way (you need permission to flush ;))
BUT LOOK AT THE MORE INFO TAB TO SEE WHAT IT IS GOING TO ROUND UP AND KILL.
Zone alarm has a free version of a firewall but then again I do not know about working with vista and it has problems/conflicts with other programs. ( zone labs)

Avast does not conflict with Spyware Dr w/Antivirus and Threatfire and firewall installed.

It makes a more complete 'Package' for security

always configure new installs!

I have not found a completely 'secure' system...........

PC Tools browser defender is another that catches bugs but then again you need to ask them if it works w/your system. It is located on the main page, on the right, "PC Tools 'Lab'" log on running firefox for protection with it or IE for it, it detects your browser and offers the appropriate prog. and ask about the "LIve scanner' it runs from cd image that you burn, and scans alternative data streams (a Live cd , you boot from it)

The OSI stack in Vista is superior to XP and is a fairly secure OS

I do not like Much of anything in security from Microsoft

The internet is not a secure thing to be hooked up to ;)

I am the freebie geek! when it comes to programs.

Phone support has been cut from PC Tools from 24/7 to business hours :(  everyone is pinching pennies.

Kaspersky has scanners like Avast but is not free and I am not sure about playing nice with other programs either

I hope this helps, if I seem disorganized it's the jet lag and 20hr sessions of setting up some networks.

I will do some more testing with the Firewall that came with Vista.  So far I have found it to be pretty stable.

I have never done much testing of defender, but ThreatFire augments that nicely if you enable Custom Rules. I will have to do some research on tweaking the Custom Rules and see what happens.

I just did a fresh install, so everything I need is backed up.

This is a good time for me to do some testing of the Vista security systems and see how they work with just ThreatFire.

I'll let you know what I find out.

I don't see using TOO much security, as being redundant. I use Windows Firewall. I use Avast and Windows Defender. So far, Avast and Windows Defender has caught all known malware. (I did an online test with Trendmicro.

I found having too much security (you may think there is no such thing) slows down a computer. I like to run light. I use Firefox with NoScript to protect me from bad websites.

I've done quite well running what I do. I also made a Disk image in case some malware DOES slip through and cause damage.

I believe you can overdo it on everything. Except I haven't found programs that really speed up the computer. Those seem to do what you can do yourself.
